Tipo de evento: Workshop
INTRODUCTIONOver the last few years, predictive computational tools have been introduced in medical practice as a result of joint research on areas of engineering, biology and medicine. The actual degree of development achieved by the computational modeling techniques together with the increasing computational power offered by the actual generation of computers permits the development and analysis of highly sophisticated models capable of predicting the results of medical procedures with reasonable accuracy. Computational modeling and simulation, computer graphics and virtual reality provide tools to represent, with a high degree of detail, the phenomena that occur within a specific patient in a non-invasive manner. On the other hand, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are and will continue to be the main cause of human death throughout the world, including developing countries such as Brazil. The social impact of the CVDs becomes more relevant due to the fact that they are one of the main causes of early retirement and in-patient treatment admissions. The important consequences of such diseases at the individual and social levels, have motivated an increasing interest in the use of computational simulation techniques in order to gain better knowledge of the behavior of the cardiovascular system. Development of personalized arterial system models, medical image processing, three-dimensional reconstruction of arterial districts, fully coupled systemic simulation according to patient-specific data are some of the features that this novel tool provides. Some of the most outstanding applications of these models to assist in medicine are: better knowledge of the behavior of the cardiovascular system at any state (normal or disease conditions) from patient-specific data; modeling of several medical interventional procedures such as percutaneous transluminal coronary balloon angioplasty, artery bypass grafting, stents and clips implantations to a variety of lesion morphologies and clinical setting; surgical planning and training; study of biochemical substance absorption, transport and diffusion in the arterial wall tissues reproducing, for example, the system response to the use of drug coated stents; evaluation of the risk of aneurysm rupture and stenoses development; characterization in a non-invasive fashion of in vivo mechanical properties of biological materials needed in the computational modeling and on the characterization diseased myocardial and artery wall tissue; teaching of graduate and undergraduate students on the function of the cardiovascular system and interpretation of clinical findings such as the arterial pulse in normal and abnormal conditions. It could be pointed out that, for instance, it is well known hemodynamical factors (oscillatory shear stresses and subsequent tissue fatigue, low and/or high average stress values, recirculation regions, long particle residence times) are closely related to the risk of rupture of aneurisms and stenoses development. Another good remarkable example may be the fact that the characterization of the properties of diseased myocardial and artery wall tissue has a great impact in the development of new techniques for diagnosis and treatment of these kinds of diseases. Moreover, a paradigm in the development of computational modeling of the cardiovascular system is related with patient-specific computational modeling. This can be attributed to the recent developments in medical image processing, geometric modeling, mesh generation and physical modeling tools. However, a significant further progress is needed to increase the understanding of various patient specific biomedical related aspects. This area is likely to grow very fast, all over the world, over the next few years due to potential cure for various human body related problems, via better understanding. The purpose of the workshop is to bring together researchers, post graduate students and professionals from medicine, biology and engineering interested in the state of the art and future trends in the development of cardiovascular computational modeling using patient-specific data. The topics of the workshop include patient-specific image processing, segmentation, geometry extraction and automatic finite element mesh generation, coupling multidimensional models of blood flow, fluid-structure interaction, multiscale modeling from cell properties, soft tissue modeling and characterization, analysis of patient-specific stenoses, cerebral and aortic aneurysms among others. The above topics will be treated through conferences given by outstanding invited speakers from Brazil and abroad. In particular, Prof Alfio Quarteroni from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and Project Coordinator of the HaeMOdel European Union Research Project on Mathematical Modeling for Haemodynamics (which includes research institutions from France, Switzerland, UK, Austria, Portugal, Spain and Italy) will present several key lectures on present and future trends on hemodynamics. This event is inserted in the scientific activities of the MACC Project on Medicine Assisted by Scientific Computing, of the HeMoLab Project on Hemodynamic Modeling and Computational Simulation, as well as of the commemorations of the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and of the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the School of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.Sponsoring Institutions: MCT Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia CNPq Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico, FAPERJ Fundação Carlos Chagas Filho de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro HUCFF Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho Instituto do Coração Edson Saad LNCC Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica Venue:Windsor Excelsior Hotel, Ave Atlantica 1800, Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, BrazilInvited Speakers: Prof. Alfio Quarteroni (Computational modeling, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and Politecnico di Milano).
